Author : WIJAYA, CYNTHIA

This study is done in order to find out the coherence in advertisements of National Geographic Magazine. Such aim is broken into two main problems of the study: (1) What is the most importan knowledge of the shared background knowledge in interpreting the advertisements in National Geographic Magazine? (2) What type of inference is used by the reader in interpreting the advertisements in National Geographic Magazine? The theories used in solving these problems are Minsky?s frame theory, Schank and Abelson?s script theory, Sanford and Garrod’s scenario theory, Van Dijk and Anderson?s schemata theory. Five advertisements from National Geographic Magazine collected as the data are analyzed using the four theories above. From the interpretation and conclusion of the analysis, it can be seen that the four theories above always occur in the process of describing the coherence of the advertisements of National Geographic Magazine. The existence of the first theory, Minsky?s frame theory, which has five elements of fiame, supports the choosing for the correct schemata. The second theory, Schank and Abelson?s script theory deals with understanding the intended meaning of the advertisements. The third theory, Sanford and Garrod?s scenario theory deals with understanding the reason behind the producing of the advertisements. The fourth theory, Van Dijk and Anderson?s schemata theory, are very important for schemata enable the readers to grasp the main topic for the advertisements. Difficulties in finding the schemata may influence in failure of finding the correct frame. If the reader does not have any background knowledge about the world, then the reader will also find difficulties in finding the intended meaning of the advertisements. If the reader cannot find the intended meaning of the advertisements, then the reader cannot know the reason behind the producing of the advertisements. In doing the analysis, the writer finds out that the most important knowledge is schemata for schemata means knowing what the advertisement is about. In the second place, the writer puts script for script means knowing the intended meaning of the advertisements. In the third place, the writer puts scenario as scenario is closely related to script; unable to know the script will also result in failure in knowing the scenario. In the fourth place, the writer puts frame for failure in knowing the frame and its elements will not have any effect in understanding the advertisements. While doing the analysis, the writer discovers that in some of the advertisements there is comparison used to show the connection between the sentences and the thing. The comparison shows in the form of metaphor and simile. For the inferences, the writer discovers that the inferences for the advertisements are mostly automatically made, only one advertisement is non-automatically made. The type of the inferences that occur are elaborative, logical, and evaluative inferences.

Parameter kekuatan tanah berdasarkan triaxial compression dengan confining pressure berkurang

Author : HOSEN;, DENNY

An Analysis of cohesion in “National News” taken from The Jakarta Post

Author : , LIEDIAWATI

This thesis is about an analysis of cohesion in “National News”, which is taken from The Jakarta Post. Since The Jakarta Post is a daily English newspaper and it gives complete information to its readers, the writer is curious to find out the quality of either its text or its sentences. In other words, the writer wanted to know whether the text of the “National News” in The Jakarta Post was cohesive or not. Therefore, she tried to examine carefully the cohesive devices and the violations in the text. The writer applied M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan’s cohesion theory. They divided cohesion into two major points that are the grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. In terms of grammatical cohesion, it is divided into reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction while in the terms of lexical cohesion, it is divided into reiteration and collocation. The writer divided and analyzed her data into the fulfillment of cohesive devices and the violation of cohesive devices. First, she identified the data as being a fulfillment or a violation. Then, she analyzed the fulfillment of the data in terms of grammatical and lexical cohesion. She also used the same procedure for the violations. To get the percentage of both the fulfillment and violation of cohesive devices she compared them by using a certain formula. At last, the findings show fiat the fulfillment of cohesive devices is 93,08% and the violation of cohesive devices is 6,92%. Thus, she concluded that the text of four “National News” in The Jakarta Post was cohesive.

An Analysis of cohesion in Asian Soups

Author : HIDAYAT, TONNY

This study is an analysis of cohesion in Asian Soups. The writer wishes to find out the quality of either its text or its sentences. In other words, the writer wants to know whether the recipes in Asian Soups as texts are cohesive or not. Therefore, he tries to examine what cohesive ties are used in Asian Soups and the highest occurrence found in it. In this study, he applies the theory of cohesion by M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan. It is divided into two main parts, grammatical and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion is divided into four parts: reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. Lexical cohesion is divided into two parts: reiteration and collocation. The writer uses qualitative approach to analyze the cohesive ties used in Asian Soups. The data are taken from a cookery book entitled, Asian Soups. For the purpose of the analysis, the writer takes 23 recipes found in it. In analyzing the data, the writer supports this study with the theory of register by Richard, Platt and Weber, and a related study of Evi Fadjarini Retno Soegiarti, a previous English Department student at Petra Christian University. From this study, it is found that the cohesive ties used in Asian Soups are anaphoric, personal, comparative reference, additive, causal, temporal conjunction, repetition, synonym, near-synonym and super ordinate. The highest occurrence of cohesive tie is addittive conjunction. The writer comes to observe that as sets of instruction, recipes present continuing procedures in preparing dish. Here, the function of additive conjunctions is to relate one procedure to another one in a recipe. The total average of cohesive ties found in all recipes is 63.2%. Therefore, it is assumed that Asian Soups is cohesive. Moreover, the use of register in Asian Soups helps the readers to understand the cooking instruction easily.
