Conversation is very important in communication. When people have conversation, there is a risk that one could misunderstand the others. Thus, Paul Grice (1965), propose a principle called “Cooperative Principle” in conversation. This principle has to be followed so that people could have a smooth conversation. To fulfill this principle, Grice states four maxims to be followed. However, from some investigations, the flouting of maxims could create humorous effects in certain situation such as comedy. This phenomenon interested me to investigate the flouting of maxims in Srimulat comedian group. Thus, I began to investigate the flouting of Conversational Maxim that happened in one episode of Srimulat?s performances, entitled “Sampek Engtay” and performed in Indosiar on October 2 nd 2001. I chose Srimulat because besides it is the most famous comedian groups in Indonesia, the characters in the group are witty people, and they are very clever in playing with words. I chose the episode “Sampek Engtay”, because the setting of the story in Chinese, so I assume that there would be many chances for the characters to play with words, especially in mixing Indonesian, Javanese and Chinese. Besides Grice?s theory, I also used some theories about humor from Raskin (1985), Norrick (1986), and Attardo (1993). In this investigation, I wanted to know what maxims were flouted and what maxim was flouted the most by the characters in Srimulat. From the study, I found that the characters in Srimulat comedian group flouted three maxims, namely Maxim of Relevance, Maxim of Manner and Maxim of Quality while Maxim of Quantity was never flouted. The most flouted maxim was the Maxim of Relevance, the second was the Maxim of Manner and the third was the Maxim of Quality. The flouting of the maxims showed that in a certain conversation, people might flout the maxims to cause humor, and that what was used by Srimulat as one of their strategies to make the audience laugh. However, it might be difficult to achieve smooth conversation if we deliberately flout the maxims. It can cause misunderstanding or conflict. This flouting that causes humorous effect only can be done in certain situation such as in a comedy.

The Violation of maxim in parents and six-year-old child conversation in drama series Desperate Housewives season 1

Cooperative Principles helps people to have a better communication with others. In a family, parents and kids often violate the cooperative principle and the conversational maxims when they are conversing. To have an open and honest communication, parents and kids should observe the conversational maxims. Therefore, the writer wanted to have a conversational analysis on parents and their six-year-old kids. In conducting the analysis, she used the theory of Cooperative Principles by Paul Grice (1975). The Principles have four conversational rules or maxims to follow. She collected the data from Indosiar TV drama series ?Desperate Housewives? season 1 by directly reading the conversations between the parents and the six-year-old children which are written on the scripts. The data are collected from episodes 1 to 5, 8, 12 to 15, and 20 in season 1. In doing the analysis, the writer identified the utterance which contains a maxim violation first, and then gave the setting. As a result, the writer found that parents are the ones who violate the maxims mostly in family conversation. They tend to lie instead of telling the truth to their children. Most are done in order to have their children under control and do what parents have said. Meanwhile, the six-year-old kids tend to say blatantly what they had in mind or feel about something or situation. Hence, in order to have a better open and honest communication, the writer suggested that parents and kids follow the conversational maxims.

The Flouting of conversational maxims by the main characters in Titanic movie

Theoretically, in communication, people should apply the Cooperative Principle that consists on four maxims of conversation. They are Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Relevance, and Maxim of Manner. According to Grice (1975), people should obey those maxims in order to have an effective communication without any miscommunication. In fact, people sometimes flout the maxims. People mostly have reasons behind flouting the maxims. Therefore, in this study, the writer is interested in analyzing the type of flouted maxims in Titanic, the reasons of the flouting maxims, and the consequences of the flouting maxims. The writer chose Titanic because it has good effects and visuals, and it also provides excellent commentary on the issue of a dramatic story as well as good appreciation by the audience. Both the verbal and nonverbal clues were taken into accounts when analyzing the occurrence of misunderstanding that, in this study, refers as the consequence. From the findings the writer found out that the mostly flouted maxims is Maxim of Relevance (54.22%). Furthermore, the second and the third mostly flouted were Maxim of Quantity (27.44%) and Maxim of Quality (16.44%). The least flouted was Maxim of Manner (2.74%). Also, in majority, the maxim was flouted as to give additional information (39.66%). Moreover, Maxim of Quantity was flouted mostly to be clear (26.67%). In addition, Maxim of Quality was also flouted for a certain reason in communication, namely to be sarcastic (53.85%). Finally the least flouted Maxim, Maxim of manner, was mostly flouted in order to get attention and to over flow the main characters feeling (50%). The fact is that although maxims were flouted, misunderstanding hardly ever took place. In majority 94.64% of the communication could still run smoothly even though maxims were flouted. Only 5.36% of the communication caused misunderstanding when the maxim was flouted. Therefore, it can be concluded that understanding and misunderstanding in conversation will not depend only on the fulfillment of the maxims.

Co-operative Principles are those that should be obeyed by a speaker and a hearer to have a smooth conversation. Grice proposes the Co-operative Principles that are reflected in the four maxims of conversation: Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Relation and Maxim of Manner. The principles are stated in the fulfillment of the conversational maxims. In a conversation, sometimes people may flout those maxims for some certain reasons, although it does not mean that they fail to communicate with each other. Flouting the conversational maxims may not bring the communication to an end, but it may cause humor. Based on these studies, this thesis was written to find out the relationship between the humor in the comedy and the flouting of conversational maxims. This thesis analyzes the flouting of conversational maxims in the drama comedy TV series ” Bajaj Bajuri Salon Oneng Edition”, which was broadcast in Trans TV. There were two episodes chosen by the writer to be analyzed. They were “Bajuri Fried Chicken” and “Mpo Minah?s Demolished House. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Grice?s theory of conversational maxims. The writer uses descriptive approach to describe the reasons why the characters in the drama comedy “Bajaj Bajuri Salon Oneng Edition” flout the maxims. After analyzing the data, the writer can prove that there were floutings of maxims in the comedy that could cause humor. The writer found out that the Maxim of Manner was flouted the most by the characters in “Bajaj Bajuri Salon Oneng Edition”. Moreover, she also found that there are some floutings of multiple maxims done by the characters to create humor. For example, the flouting of the Maxim of Relation combined with the flouting of the Maxim of Manner occurred the most in the drama comedy “Bajaj Bajuri Salon Oneng Edition”. From the findings, the writer can conclude that the flouting of the maxims in a conversation is important to create humor.

The Flouted maxims that create the funniness in ‘Extravaganza’

In conducting conversation, people share information with others. There are many theories that can be obeyed in order to achieve smooth conversation. One of them is the theory of Cooperative Principle that was proposed by Grice (1975). The participants of the conversation are expected to follow four conversational maxims to complete the effective use of Cooperative Principle, which are Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Relevance, and Maxim of Manner. These conversational maxims are essential for the participants to avoid miscommunication. However, in some occasions, people flout the maxims. Instead of causing miscommunication, the flouting of conversational maxim can create the humorous effect in comedy show. Therefore, the writer is curious to investigate the flouting of maxims that creates funniness. She uses Extravaganza as the source of data because it is one of the most famous programs of comedian group in Indonesia nowadays. She would like to know what maxims are flouted and which maxim is flouted the most frequently in order to create the funniness in this show. She limits her study on two episodes of Extravaganza, which were broadcasted on 18 and 25 February 2006. She uses Grice?s theory of Cooperative Principle in analyzing the data. She finds that the characters in these two episodes of Extravaganza mostly flouted the Maxim of Relevance by giving irrelevant contribution. Instead of causing miscommunication, the flouting of conversational maxims can be used as the strategy to produce humorous effect.

The Study of conversational maxims in play entitled LUV

This thesis is study of conversational maxims that are found in the conversations that occur between characters: Milt, Ellen and Harry in the play LUV It is about the relationship between friends (Milt and Harry/Harry and Ellen) and a couple (Milt and Ellen/Ellen and Harry). Throughout this study, the writer wants to analyse what conversational maxims that are used by each character (when talking to the other and vise versa). Besides, she also discusses what the relationship between the characters or how the conversational maxims are used. The importance of this study is to make people understand that everybody can violate or obey one or more conversational maxims. The limiation of her discussion pairs and each pair consists of four fragments. The writer t hinks that the play is worth discussing because basically, the existance of man is unseparable of violating or obeying the conversational maxims. In analysing this conversational maxims, she uses The Cooperative Principles and The Maxims by Paul Grice (1975) that are used to decide whether the utterances obey those maxims or violate them. She chooses this play since Murray Schisgal’s work entitled LUV amused New York audiences during a long run. And she finally found that all of the conversational maxims are used in the play and the relation between characters influances the Conversational Maxims whether he/she violates or obyes.

A Study of conversational maxims in radio advertisements

Since radio advertisements only rely on language to advertise, they are very interesting to be analysed. In this thesis the writer wanted to find out the kind of maxims which are the most followed and flouted in the onversational radio advertisements. Thus, she chose 15 conversational radio advertisements broadcasted by various radio stations, and analysed them based on Grice’s conversational principle with its maxims. There are four maxims, but the writer only used three of them: maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner, excluding maxim of quality since she could not determine whether the speakers of the advertisements speak truthfully, or lie. After analysing, the writer found out that maxim of quantity was the most flouted and maxim of relevance was the most followed, while maxim of manner was flouted several times. She also found out that the flouting of maxim of quantity in the conversation is used as one of the strategies to inform the product to the listeners. Moreover, by flouting the maxim of manner, except `be brief’, it made the advertisement sounds different and more creative than others. From the findings, the writer concluded that the participants in the conversational radio advertisements obviously violated the conversational maxims on purpose, that is to achieve advertising goals.
