This study discusses one of Louisa MayAlcott?s novels entitled A Long Fatal Love Chase. This discussion talks about the failure of the main female character?s efforts to escape from her miserable life. It is focusing on Rosamond?s efforts and failure to escape from her miserable life. I am interested to talk about her efforts and failure in order to find out the ways Rosamond uses to escape from her miserable life and also the reasons that cause her failure to get out from it. In analyzing the novel, I use the literary theories such as the theory of characterization and the theory of conflict. The theory of characterization is useful to analyze Rosamond as the main female character in the novel while the theory of conflict is useful to analyze the inner and the outer conflicts that she faces. Rosamond?s efforts and failure appear because Rosamond wants to get out from her miserable life caused by her grandfather?s lack of affection and Phillip Tempest?s obsessive love. She does not easily give up to her fate. She does a lot of efforts to make her miserable life end. Besides, she also experiences inner conflicts and outer conflicts during her efforts to escape from her miserable life. She experiences her inner conflict when she has to choose between Phillip and De Luneville, while her outer conflict is when she consistently refuses Phillip?s offer to be his wife. Unfortunately, all her efforts are useless. She experiences failure because she is incapable to escape from Phillip?s obsessive love, but she gets her freedom through her death.

Author : NATALIA, MARIA

This thesis mainly deals with the comparative study of the male dominance towards the two main female characters of George Eliot?s novels, The Mill on the Floss and Felix holt, the radical Maggie Tulliver and Esther Lyon. Both Maggie Tulliver and Esther Lyon have to undergo hostilities in dealing with the main male characters as the outcome of the dominance of the main male characters, Tom Tulliver and Felix Holt. Despite the fact that Maggie and Esther have to undergo a similar predicament, they apply contradictory attitudes in dealing with it; nevertheless, in the end both of them encounter equivalent result: the failure to gain equality with the male characters. By comparing and contrasting the male dominance of Tom Tulliver and of Felix Holt as well as the attitudes of Maggie Tulliver and of Esther Lyon by means of the literary theory and the theory of Marxist feminism, I want to know why the male dominance towards the main female characters subsists despite the contradictory attitudes of the heroines. In fact, this comparative study aims to show that Maggie and Esther fail to gain equality with the main male characters due to the strength of male dominance itself. Having to encounter the biggest dominance from her brother, Tom Tulliver, Maggie attempts to fortify herself by opposing Tom?s male force. Nevertheless, instead of gaining equality with Tom, she has to meet frustrating result which is the dereliction to elude from Tom?s dominance. This is due to the fact that Tom strengthens his dominance towards Maggie whenever she opposes his dominance that in the end, Maggie reconciles herself to the reality that Tom is superior to her. On the other hand, Esther, who has to encounter the dominance of Felix Holt, applies her own discrepant attitudes from those of Maggie in dealing with Felix?s dominance. Obliging herself to be submissive, Esther attempts to safeguard herself from Felix?s dominance. Notwithstanding her discrepant attitudes from those of Maggie, still she has to encounter equivalent result. In fact, Esther has accepted the fact that Felix is her superior; thus she failed from the very first time and this makes her different from Maggie. Thus, Maggie and Esther must reconcile themselves to the reality that all of their endeavors to gain equality with the main male characters are nothing but fruitless dream, albeit Maggie?s attitudes are rebellious while Esther?s attitudes are submissive. This shows that any kinds of demeanor used by Maggie and Esther in dealing with the male dominance are confronted to the dead ends which are constructed by the male dominance. As a result, since Maggie and Esther are ensnared within the vicious cycle of male dominance, they will never be able to acquire their self-determination anymore, and all of their endeavors are unavailing.

Expressing gratitude is one of the routinized speech acts which has a social or polite meaning besides apologizing. In this case, people look at it as a politeness behaviour and a crucial part to build and establish social relationships. There are two important linguistic features such as different cultural backgrounds and gender of the speakers that influence people in expressing gratitude. From these factors, the writer is interested in analyzing gratitude expressions, particularly about strategies they used in expressing gratitude. The data of this study were taken from the open-ended questionnaires distributed to ten Javanese students and ten Chinese-Indonesian students of Faculty of Economy of Petra Christian University, that each group consisted of five males and five females. The data were categorized based on Haverkate’s thanking strategy (1984) that consists of eight strategies. They are thanking somebody explicitly, expressing gratitude, expressing appreciation of the addressee, expressing appreciation of the act, acknowledging a debt of gratitude stressing one’s gratitude, expressing emotion, and self-denigration. From the analysis, the writer finds out that strategy 1, thanking somebody explicitly, is the most strategy used by both male and female Javanese and Chinese-Indonesian students. However, based on gender analysis, female respondents used it more than male respondents did. On the ethnicity analysis, Chinese-Indonesian students used strategy 1 more than Javanese students did. Another two strategies mostly used by the students are strategy 2, expressing gratitude, and strategy 7, expressing emotion. The interesting here is also found in the use of expression of making a joke by the students as the strategy to express their gratitude. This strategy is not included in the eight strategies proposed by Haverkate. Finally, the findings suggested that females tended to use direct strategy more than men did; while Chinese-Indonesian students tended to use direct strategy than Javanese students did. The writer then concludes that people of different sex and ethnicity do have differences and similarities in using strategy of expressing gratitude.

Author : SANYOTO, JENNY

The main theme of this thesis is the search for self-identity, which reveals elements of feminism in Edith Wharton?s novel, The Buccaneers. My analysis focuses on the main female character, Annabel St. George. How Annabel resolves her conflicts with her husband and her mother-in-law appear to have elements of feminism, which she demands to be treated as an equal to her husband. In the 1 century, women frequently faced injustice, not only in the field of education, but also their dependence on marriage laws. Their lack of opportunity in job and education placed women in a subordinate social position. There are two problems statement. First is, whether Annabel?s courage in breaking the rule has something to do with her search for self-identity. Second is, what gave Annabel the courage to violate the particular norm? Those problems lead to the feminist action. The purpose of the study is to examine more deeply Annabel?s courage to fight against 19 th century English norms. Annabel has found her self-identity when finally she dares to speak up against her husband and her mother-in-law. Her courage is apparent to be a feminist action. The literary tools that I use to analyze this thesis are data based on library research, they include: feminist theories, the psychological concept of self-identity, literary tools such as characterization and conflicts. My analysis begins when Annabel goes to London where she marries a duke of Tintagel. I give a brief background of Annabel?s life before she goes to London, so that the readers can see how Annabel?s character develop from a childish, immature girl into an independent and smart woman. My analysis ends when Annabel gets divorce from her husband and decides to be with Guy Thwarte. The conclusion is Annabel?s courage to violate the norm is related to her search for self-identity. Annabel?s search for self-identity and her courage reveal elements of feminism.

Taboo words produced by male and female characters in the movie boys don’t cry

Author : WATI, YOHANA

Generally, taboo words are words which were ‘not only considered inappropriate for certain context, but were also forbidden in most communicative events’ (Trudgill, 1974:29-3 1 ) However, regardless the fact that taboo words were condemned to use, their presence was undeniable, and it did, in fact, exist in our community. The traditional conception said that females were forbidden to use it for any reasons, while males had their freedom because of the context of masculinity involved. Since the condition became more flexible toward males and females, the pressure got more relaxed. Therefore, the writer was curious to know the kinds of taboo words that males and females used, their tabooed subjects, and their primary purpose to use it. The data was taken from the movie Boys don?t cry, and the approach used was a qualitative-descriptive approach. On the other hand, the theories used to analyze the data were divided into two main theories and one supporting theory. The main theories were taken from the combination between Liedlich and Wardhaugh?s theory about the classification of taboo words and Liedlich?s theory of the purpose. Meanwhile, Hymes? theory about the factors exist in communicative events was also taken to support the analysis of the user?s purpose in using taboo words. The final result of this study was that the taboo word that was often used by both males and females was fuck, and they shared the same tabooed subject, which was Sex. The purpose was quite different. While males used taboo words for the purpose of identification, females used them to provide catharsis.
