Author : DEWI, AMELIA

This study is basically an analysis of the dialogues between Yatun and her father, the two main characters of “Ambyuke Nyonyah Besar”, a short story written in Surabaya Javanese dialect by Suparto Brata. In this study, the writer looked for the associative lexical items of the utterances and finds both their cognitive and associative meaning in order to reveal the propositional content and the illocutionary force of the speech act utterances. This study is a qualitative research; therefore, the main instrument is the writer herself. The source of data was taken from the dialogues between the main characters in Suparto Brata?s short story `Ambyuke Nyonyah Besar”, one of the short-stories in his book “TREM Antologi Crita Cekak”, a compilation of twenty short-stories which were all written in Javanese. For her analysis, first she organized the utterances between Yatun and her father by giving numbers. Then, she grouped them based on their topics. Next, she proceeded to identifying the propositional content of the utterance in which she looked for both cognitive and associative meaning of the associative lexical items found in the utterances. Having analyzed all the data, she found out twenty-two speech act utterances with various associative lexical items used by the characters in speaking to each other. Those associative lexical items had both cognitive and associative meanings. The propositional content of the utterances were based on both types of meaning above. However, the illocutionary forces of the utterances were derived from the propositional content of the associative meaning of the associative lexical items as the writer of this study believes that it reveals the intended meaning of the speaker. Finally, the writer of this study concluded that in order to understand Javanese, both speaker and interlocutor should understand the two types of meanings revealed in the associative lexical items, which were the cognitive and the associative meanings of the associative lexical items. By analyzing of the associative lexical items, it was possible to determine the illocutionary force of the utterance. In this way, what the speaker intended to say was eventually revealed.

Author : WATI, YOHANA

Generally, taboo words are words which were ‘not only considered inappropriate for certain context, but were also forbidden in most communicative events’ (Trudgill, 1974:29-3 1 ) However, regardless the fact that taboo words were condemned to use, their presence was undeniable, and it did, in fact, exist in our community. The traditional conception said that females were forbidden to use it for any reasons, while males had their freedom because of the context of masculinity involved. Since the condition became more flexible toward males and females, the pressure got more relaxed. Therefore, the writer was curious to know the kinds of taboo words that males and females used, their tabooed subjects, and their primary purpose to use it. The data was taken from the movie Boys don?t cry, and the approach used was a qualitative-descriptive approach. On the other hand, the theories used to analyze the data were divided into two main theories and one supporting theory. The main theories were taken from the combination between Liedlich and Wardhaugh?s theory about the classification of taboo words and Liedlich?s theory of the purpose. Meanwhile, Hymes? theory about the factors exist in communicative events was also taken to support the analysis of the user?s purpose in using taboo words. The final result of this study was that the taboo word that was often used by both males and females was fuck, and they shared the same tabooed subject, which was Sex. The purpose was quite different. While males used taboo words for the purpose of identification, females used them to provide catharsis.

Functional stylistics in cigarette advertisements slogans

Author : JOEWONO, FRANSISKA

Cigarette advertisements have been a great controversy among the advertisers and the governments. As governments put warnings of the health hazard in the cigarette advertisements, the advertisers, thus, should create effective advertisements by using slogans. In order to create good slogans, the advertisers needs to use certain style that would make the slogans catchy, easy to understand, and easy to repeat (Kirkpatrick, 1964). Stylistics forms are used to serve this purpose, and the devices such as the sound pattern, lexical selection, and imagery are functioned in the slogans. As stylistics is the product of abstraction (Spencer, 1964:59), thus, the stylistics theory used are those by Wellek and Warren(1965), Short (1996), and Ullman ( 1973). For the related theories, this study uses the review of theories by Wells, Burnett and Moriarty (2000), Russel and Lane(l999), and by Kirkpatrick (1964) for the principles of slogans in advertisements. Qualitative approach is used in this study to describe the linguistics phenomenon in the cigarette advertisements slogans as it investigates the interesting part of the making process of the slogans as well as the slogans resulted from it. From the analysis of functional stylistics, the stylistics forms are used well in the slogans as they are influenced greatly by the style-forming factors, such as the application of principles of advertisements, language and slogans, and other factors discovered in the analysis, such as the use of appeals, the use of symbolic characters, and the claim of certain qualities of the cigarette.

Author : JUWITA, MARIA

Persuasion is an important means of human relationship and activity. This study deals with the role of persuasion in salesmanship. One method of salesmanship which emphasizes the process of direct selling is Multi-Level Marketing. Here, salespeople use persuasive speech in order to assure the superiority of their product. In reality, they apply proper strategies to answer denials from prospective customers. Meanwhile, my research studied the persuading strategies that are used by senior and junior salespeople. The purpose is to find out the differences of the use of persuading strategies by senior and junior salespeople and those that are mostly used by the seniors. To conduct my research, I used theory persuading strategies by Bender (1 980).The theory offers ten strategies that might be applied to persuade or answers denials as often occurs in sales presentation. Those strategies are direct statement, indirect statement, lead, confirmation, feedback, swivel, challenge, assumption, stimulator, and milestone-question. Next, I used qualitative approach since I was the main instrument. The other instrument was a role-play situation which was given to twelve respondents to reflect the real situation during the process of selling. I act as the customers and gave denials that doubt the quality of the products, the necessity of having the product, and the fair price. Through the responses given, it is seen the persuading strategies that are used. Finally, from Bender?s persuading strategies, I found that strategy stimulator, strategy confirmation and strategy swivel are strategies that were mostly used by the senior salespeople. Those strategies suggest salespeople to mention the advantages of having the products related to the customers? needs in daily life and the superiority of the products, comparing to the other brands.

Author : MUSTIKA, IDA

This study is about Politeness Strategies; strategies that are used to avoid or minimize the threat on the interlocutor?s face. The writer is interested in doing this research because Politeness Strategies are very important in social interaction or daily conversation. In her study, she is curious to find out the Politeness Strategies used by Mary and Ted when they are talking to both male and female interlocutors in the movie There?s Something About Mary. Besides, she also wants to know about the kinds of Politeness Strategies used the most by them. In analyzing the data, she uses the theory of Brown and Levinson. The writer uses the transcriptions of the movie as her data. To analyze the data, the Writer uses descriptive-qualitative approach. After analyzing the data, the writer finds out that both Mary and Ted use all kinds of Politeness Strategies as suggested by Brown and Levinson and they also use Positive Politeness the most to both male and female interlocutors. It shows that both of them try to maintain the close relationships that they have with their friends, male and female. However, Ted uses Positive Politeness more that Mary does. After getting the findings, the writer surprisingly found that the stereotype that women tend to be more polite than men is not true. From the analysis, it can be seen that both Mary and Ted, male and female characters in this movie, use the same numbers of occurrence of Negative Politeness strategies, that is, 14 times to both male and female interlocutors. It means that the occurrence of Negative Politeness that they use is the same. Because Negative Politeness is a formality-oriented and it is used to satisfy the negative face of the hearer, both male and female characters in this movie can be considered as polite; and their degree of politeness is the same.

Lennie’s and George’s nonstandard use of English as seen in John Steinbeck’s “of mice and men”

Author : CHRISTIANA, CYNTHIA

This study deals with Lennie’s and George’s Nonstandard grammatical features differences in John Ernst Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men (1937). Armand Schwerner in his notes of Of Mice and Men stated that Lennie and George are different in manner and mind. Lennie is illustrated as a retarded person, and in contrast, George is depicted as having an active mind. Apart from their different manner and mind, they share the same language of nonstandard English. Based on this fact, in this thesis, the writer focuses on Lennie’s and George’s nonstandard grammatical features, in this case, to find out in what way their nonstandard grammatical features differ. In order to identify the data, the writer needs some theories relating to the study itself. Regarding this matter, the writer employs Guth’s nonstandard features as her main theory, and puts Trudgill’s, Labov’s, Pride’s, Holmes’s, and Nelson’s as the supporting theories. The data collected are linguistic data, in this matter nonstandard grammatical features. The analysis itself is split into three major points as follows; Lennie’s nonstandard grammatical features, George’s nonstandard grammatical features, and their differences. By analyzing the data the writer tries to infer the interpretation as the conclusion of the study. The writer may conclude that Lennie is indeed identified using less nonstandard grammatical features than George both in frequencies and types, however, they do not show any significant diffrences. In essence, Lennie uses six types of nonstandard grammatical features such as double negatives, ain’t, verb forms, pronoun forms, reversal of subject and verb I, and connectives. On the other hand, George employs seven types of features as follows: verb forms, double negatives, ain’t, pronoun forms, duplicated subject, and existential they, and connectives.

Local and global errors in the journals writen by the first writing class students

Author : GANY, RENALDY

This research is written to reveal local and global errors produced by the first writing class students in their journals. The study of local and global errors is the study on the communicative effect classification. It focuses on distinguishing between errors that seem to cause miscommunication (global) and those that do not (local). This study is conducted with the hope of giving a contribution to second language learners in the process of their second language acquisition. By evaluating the errors produced, this thesis is hoped to be able to help learners to learn when they correct the errors. Students and teachers here are expected to have a better understanding on the importance of making errors. This is a descriptive-qualitative study, as the writer describes and explores the errors without making any generalization from the findings. Here, the writer acts as the key instrument to collect the data. The errors in this study are identified and examined based on standard English grammar by Quirk and Greenbaum. The major theory applied was Politzer and Ramirez’s linguistic category taxonomy to classify the local errors into categories and subcategories, while Dulay and Hurt’s and Hurt and Kiparsky?s classifications of global errors were used to classify and explain the global errors. He found that most errors found in this study were considered local. Only three cases out of 311 errors found in this study were global. The students made almost all the subcategories of local error found in the Politzer and Ramirez’s linguistic category taxonomy. Noun phrase deviation was the most common error. For global errors, the students used wrong sentence connector and missing cues to signal obligatory exceptions of syntactic rules.

Author : WULANDARI, LYLY

This thesis is study of conversational maxims that are found in the conversations that occur between characters: Milt, Ellen and Harry in the play LUV It is about the relationship between friends (Milt and Harry/Harry and Ellen) and a couple (Milt and Ellen/Ellen and Harry). Throughout this study, the writer wants to analyse what conversational maxims that are used by each character (when talking to the other and vise versa). Besides, she also discusses what the relationship between the characters or how the conversational maxims are used. The importance of this study is to make people understand that everybody can violate or obey one or more conversational maxims. The limiation of her discussion pairs and each pair consists of four fragments. The writer t hinks that the play is worth discussing because basically, the existance of man is unseparable of violating or obeying the conversational maxims. In analysing this conversational maxims, she uses The Cooperative Principles and The Maxims by Paul Grice (1975) that are used to decide whether the utterances obey those maxims or violate them. She chooses this play since Murray Schisgal’s work entitled LUV amused New York audiences during a long run. And she finally found that all of the conversational maxims are used in the play and the relation between characters influances the Conversational Maxims whether he/she violates or obyes.
