Author : PRANOTO, CHOPIN

Alexander Solzhenitsyn?s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich had been banned in the Stalin?s era, but still it was successfully used as a tool to criticize the Russian government at that time, and that is the reason for the thesis writer to put his interest on this matter. The main character?s ordinary lifestyle and the cruel and inhuman concentration camp lifestyle were contrasted to each other when he had to enter the concentration camp. Here, Shukov, the main character, faced two types of community to live with, the non-prisoners and the other prisoners. The analysis is on how Shukov dealt with his social interactions problems. That is why, the analysis was done by using the sociological theory as the supporting theory, and the literary theory as the main theory (characterization and setting). Besides, library and Internet also become the truthful sources in providing the valid details. Through the analysis, it could be seen that Shukov is able to interact socially with his new community, and this fact is followed with the truth that there are some strange results in comparison between Shukov?s interactions with the non-prisoners and the other prisoners of the concentration camp. The positive interactions happen more when he dealt with the other prisoners. However, when he dealt with the non-prisoners the negative interactions were mostly be the ones that took place instead, and the neutral interactions happened in both conditions for they brought direct advantages to Shukov. Therefore, the social interaction of Shukov with his new community is indeed affected by the character traits of the characters who are involved, the setting, and also the differences that existed inside themselves. Besides, the physical and the social setting also affected the existence of the social-interaction of the main character.

Author : CHRISTIANA, CYNTHIA

This study deals with Lennie’s and George’s Nonstandard grammatical features differences in John Ernst Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men (1937). Armand Schwerner in his notes of Of Mice and Men stated that Lennie and George are different in manner and mind. Lennie is illustrated as a retarded person, and in contrast, George is depicted as having an active mind. Apart from their different manner and mind, they share the same language of nonstandard English. Based on this fact, in this thesis, the writer focuses on Lennie’s and George’s nonstandard grammatical features, in this case, to find out in what way their nonstandard grammatical features differ. In order to identify the data, the writer needs some theories relating to the study itself. Regarding this matter, the writer employs Guth’s nonstandard features as her main theory, and puts Trudgill’s, Labov’s, Pride’s, Holmes’s, and Nelson’s as the supporting theories. The data collected are linguistic data, in this matter nonstandard grammatical features. The analysis itself is split into three major points as follows; Lennie’s nonstandard grammatical features, George’s nonstandard grammatical features, and their differences. By analyzing the data the writer tries to infer the interpretation as the conclusion of the study. The writer may conclude that Lennie is indeed identified using less nonstandard grammatical features than George both in frequencies and types, however, they do not show any significant diffrences. In essence, Lennie uses six types of nonstandard grammatical features such as double negatives, ain’t, verb forms, pronoun forms, reversal of subject and verb I, and connectives. On the other hand, George employs seven types of features as follows: verb forms, double negatives, ain’t, pronoun forms, duplicated subject, and existential they, and connectives.

Author : DEVIANTI, HAPPY

The writer uses George Bernard Shaw?s Pygmalion as the object of her study in this thesis. George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1926 and Pygmalion is one of his most popular plays. In this play, he showed that accent and speech provides a way to social advancement. The writer finds that at the beginning of the play the major character, Eliza Doolittle, often uses non-appropriate words as the diction of her language use. Then, by reforming the choice of words (diction) of Eliza, Professor Higgins, transformed Eliza into a lady and her language especially her choice of words show the change at the end of the play. This fact attracts the attention of the writer to find out what kinds of changes occur in Eliza?s choice of words and to analyze what factors influence the change of her diction. In carrying out her study, she uses Mc Crimmon?s theory of diction as the main theory and Dell Hyme?s Ethnography of Communication as the supporting theory. This study is conducted through content analysis. The data for the analysis covers the diction which is used by Eliza Doolittle in the play. Then the Writer analyzes the diction especially on the appropriateness act by act and compares them later to determine the factors that causes of the changes of diction in the language spoken by Eliza.

Author : SURYAWATI, PRETTY

Chatting plays an important role in enhancing the social relationship. People realize about it but many of them still think that chatting only carry such functions like imparting and seeking factual information, expressing and finding out emotional attitudes, or socializing. In fact, in chatting people do not only exchange information or express and find out emotional attitudes. In chatting, people may also express and find out intellectual and moral attitudes, or get something done (suasion). In conducting the research on chatting in The Joy Luck Club, particularly taken from American Translation part, the writer tries to answer two questions. First, what kind of speech function is used mostly in the chatting? Second, what is the sub-function used mostly in each speech function? In analyzing the data, she uses the theory of threshold level by van Ek. She uses qualitative approach to describe speech functions and speech sub-functions found in the chatting. The writer finds the mostly used speech function is imparting and seeking factual information with sub-function: reporting as the one mostly used. The second place is occupied by speech function: expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes with sub-function: expressing how certain/uncertain one is of something as the one mostly used. The third place is occupied by speech function: expressing and finding out emotional attitudes with its sub-function: expressing displeasure or dislike. The highest occurrence sub-functions of speech function: expressing and finding out moral attitudes are expressing disapproval and expressing appreciation. The highest occurrence sub-function of speech function: suasion is instructing and directing others to do something. The only used sub-function of speech function socializing is to attract attention. From the six speech functions, only two of them are of highest occurrence in the chatting. One is imparting and seeking factual infomation and the others is expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes.
