The way to express the opening expression has become a kind of important expression in people?s interaction. It is because in everyday conversation, almost all people produce the opening expressions toward their interlocutors before they start to talk about the main topic. Also, the opening expression may indicate that we admit the existence of others or we concern to others. Thus, I am interested in studying more about the use of opening expressions from the students? point of view, In this study, I analyze the use of opening expression in terms of topic, types of opening expressions, the types of sentences. After that, I analyze the similar and different ways of producing the opening expressions between females and males. The data are collected from females? and males? utterances based on the observation. In conducting this research, I use the qualitative approach to get holistic picture about opening expressions. In analyzing the data, I present the data into tables in order to find the similarities and/or differences of the opening expressions in terms of topic, types of opening expressions, the types of sentences produced by females and males students. In findings, mostly, females talk about free time and entertainment and relation with others. Meanwhile, males talk about education and future career. Both females and males produce the opening expressions in the forms of sentences or more than one word and say them in interrogative forms and simple sentences.

English grammatical errors found in the writing assigment of the basic I level student at Kelt

Author : OKTAVIA, ANYTA

Grammar is an essential requirement toward a successful result in learning any language, including English. The grammatical error in speaking is tolerable since people focus more on the message. On the contrary, people have to pay more attention both to what they want to say (substance) and also how they are going to express their ideas (medium) in writing. The grammatical errors in writing may/will distort and disturb the coherence of the piece of writing By using correct grammatical rules, it will ensure good writing. It is for this reason that, I am eager to analyze the grammatical errors in the writing assignment of the basic I level students at KELT (Key English Language Learning). I use qualitative method since I will identify and classify the type of grammar errors and find the frequency of the occurrence of the errors made by the students of KELT. While doing this, I will also provide the correct forms for the errors. In this research, I am not concerned with the reasons why they produce grammatical those errors. As soon as a grammar rules is broken, an error has been committed. In conducting the thesis, I use the theory of Jack. C. Richards based on his book, ?Error analysis Perspectives on Second Language Acquisition?. He classifies the grammatical errors into 6 categories. They are Errors in the Production of Verb Groups, Errors in the Distribution of Verb Groups, Miscellaneous Errors, Errors in the Use of Prepositions, Errors in the Use of Articles, and Errors in the Use of Questions. After analyzing the data, the writer only finds 4 kinds of errors, namely, errors in the Production of Verb Groups, miscellaneous Errors, errors in the use of prepositions and errors in the use of articles. Most students tend to make errors in the production of verb group, especially in the agreement of verb with subject and tenses. Finally, l recommend that the teacher and students pay more attention on the internalization of grammatical rules. I hope that this thesis will give the teachers and students a better understanding about grammar.

Language code varietes used by some students from Kupang of the year 2000 in Petra Christian University: a case study

Author : PATRISIA, CAROLINA

Indonesia is a multilingual speech community with two main groups of languages, Standard Indonesian and ethnic languages. Thus, there are still many ethnic groups who maintain the use of their ethnic languages. This situation can also be observed in Petra Christian University (PCU) that in respect to multi-ethnicity and multi-cultural, can be regarded as Indonesia in a much smaller scale. One of the ethnic groups in PCU who still maintain the use of ethnic language is students from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. Hence, those Kupang students still use Kupang Malay (KM) as their ethnic language. KM itself has deep functions for Kupang people as regional pride, regional identity, and as a tool of communication. Thus, the writer used Holmes?s theory of sociolinguistics (1992) as her main theory in order to accomplish her research about language code varieties used by some students from Kupang of the year 2000 in PCU. Furthermore, the writer explained about the theory of code choices in relating to code mixing and code switching, theory of domain from Fishman?s work, about the standard languages and she also explained about the theory of KM itself After that, in analysing the data, she used a qualitative descriptive approach combining with a very limited of quantitative approach. Because of that, some Kupang students have the important role as her sources in gathering the data. Thus, their language repertoires were necessary, when she, as the main instrument, collected the data by observing or even by interviewing them. From the analysis, she found out that those Kupang students made some code choices in communicating with people, as the result of some social factors that influenced them to use those codes. Here, the social factors are the participants, the topic of conversation, the function of their speech, educational effect, and the setting in case of with whom they are living. Moreover, in using those codes varieties, they often mixed and switched their languages in order to convey meanings. On the other hand, those Kupang students used KM as the most dominant code or variety of language because of their feelings of belonging, and their feelings of longing while they used their mother tongue in non-native speakers of KM area. After all, the writer concludes that those Kupang students of the year 2000 used their mother tongue or first language dominantly in order to maintain KM as a local language, which functions as a symbol of regional pride, a symbol of regional identity, and as a means of communication. Thus, they maintain KM in order to show their loyalty to their ethnic language although they live in the area/region of non-native speaker of KM.

Local and global errors in the journals writen by the first writing class students

Author : GANY, RENALDY

This research is written to reveal local and global errors produced by the first writing class students in their journals. The study of local and global errors is the study on the communicative effect classification. It focuses on distinguishing between errors that seem to cause miscommunication (global) and those that do not (local). This study is conducted with the hope of giving a contribution to second language learners in the process of their second language acquisition. By evaluating the errors produced, this thesis is hoped to be able to help learners to learn when they correct the errors. Students and teachers here are expected to have a better understanding on the importance of making errors. This is a descriptive-qualitative study, as the writer describes and explores the errors without making any generalization from the findings. Here, the writer acts as the key instrument to collect the data. The errors in this study are identified and examined based on standard English grammar by Quirk and Greenbaum. The major theory applied was Politzer and Ramirez’s linguistic category taxonomy to classify the local errors into categories and subcategories, while Dulay and Hurt’s and Hurt and Kiparsky?s classifications of global errors were used to classify and explain the global errors. He found that most errors found in this study were considered local. Only three cases out of 311 errors found in this study were global. The students made almost all the subcategories of local error found in the Politzer and Ramirez’s linguistic category taxonomy. Noun phrase deviation was the most common error. For global errors, the students used wrong sentence connector and missing cues to signal obligatory exceptions of syntactic rules.

Author : FRANSISKHO, VERA

Opening a telephone conversation is essential in a non face-to-face interaction especially when it happens between different sex. Many linguists believe that both sexes interact with different strategies. This study analyzed the different opening types, patterns, and length of telephone conversations performed by Indonesian male and female subjects. The data were obtained through recording the subjects while they were talking on the telephone. Then, the data were analyzed by dividing it into four categories and by comparing the categories based on the opening patterns. The finding shows that the opening types and patterns of telephone conversations were more various in mixed-sex conversations. In the length of sequence, the same-sex subjects performed short conversations by using small numbers and frequency of turns. On the other hand, the mixed sex performed longer conversations to open a telephone call.
