An analysis of telephone conversation openings used by Indonesian male and female university students

Opening a telephone conversation is essential in a non face-to-face interaction especially when it happens between different sex. Many linguists believe that both sexes interact with different strategies. This study analyzed the different opening types, patterns, and length of telephone conversations performed by Indonesian male and female subjects. The data were obtained through recording the subjects while they were talking on the telephone. Then, the data were analyzed by dividing it into four categories and by comparing the categories based on the opening patterns. The finding shows that the opening types and patterns of telephone conversations were more various in mixed-sex conversations. In the length of sequence, the same-sex subjects performed short conversations by using small numbers and frequency of turns. On the other hand, the mixed sex performed longer conversations to open a telephone call.

A Study of cohesion in the essays of students of writing IV, of the Faculty of Letters, Petra Christian University

This thesis is an analysis of cohesion in the essays of Writing IV Faculty of Letters? students. The researcher thinks that the ability to write well is very important for the students, for example in making their thesis. So, it is necessary for the students to know about cohesion. That is why the researcher decided to analyze Writing IV essays. She chose Writing IV essays because although the students already have enough experience in writing, the researcher still find mistakes in their essays. This reason also motivates her in analyzing Writing IV essays. In her thesis, she wants to find out the types of cohesion which are correctly and incorrectly used by the students. She hopes that the result of her research will be useful for the students of Faculty of Letters who major in Linguistics and who is interested in cohesion. In her analysis, the main theory that is used by the researcher is the theory of cohesion by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The theory talks about grammatical cohesion, which can be conveyed through Reference, Substitution, Ellipsis, and Conjunction; and lexical cohesion through Reiteration and Collocation. She applies this theory to analyze the data. She collects the data by photocopying the students? writing essays and she analyzes the essays thoroughly to find the cohesion types that occur in the essays. From the research, she finds that in all cohesion types, the correctly used types have higher number of occurrences than the incorrectly used ones. The fulfillment mostly happens in Conjunction and the mistake mostly occurs in Reference. In her analysis, the researcher also finds avoidance effect happens in certain cohesion types and mostly in Ellipsis. So, from the whole research, the researcher concludes that the students can apply cohesion well.

Pemodelan pemilihan moda untuk perjalan menuju kampus menggunakan kendaraan pribadi dan kendaraan umum (studi kasus unversitas Surabaya)

Daerah sekitar kampus Universitas Surabaya (UBAYA) merupakan salah satu lokasi yang rawan kemacetan. Hal tersebut disebabkan pada saat jam sibuk perkuliahan, jalan di sekitar kampus digunakan oleh berbagai pihak (mahasiswa, dosen, karyawan, masyarakat sekitar) untuk berbagai kepentingan. Untuk mengatasinya perlu diketahui faktor dan alasan yang mempengaruhi mahasiswa dalam memilih moda transportasi untuk perjalanan menuju kampus. Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik mahasiswa pengguna kendaraan pribadi dan kendaraan umum serta membuat model pemilihan moda dari tempat tinggal menuju kampus. Survey dilakukan selama 2 minggu dengan menyebarkan kuisioner pada setiap jurusan secara cluster random sampling. Hasil survey dianalisis dengan chi square test untuk mengetahui hubungan antar variabel karakteristik mahasiswa dan analytic hierarchy process (AHP) untuk menentukan urutan faktor pemilihan moda serta menguji sensitivitasnya. Hasil analisis dari 697 responden, yang memilih menggunakan sepeda motor sebesar 41,4%, mobil pribadi 34,2% dan kendaraan umum 5,7%. Pengeluaran rata-rata jika menggunakan mobil pribadi yaitu sebesar Rp. 185.000/bulan, kendaraan umum (bus dan bemo) Rp. 71.000/bulan dan sepeda motor Rp. 46.000/bulan.? Waktu perjalanan rata-rata jika menggunakan bemo 38,90 menit, mobil pribadi 28,07 menit dan sepeda motor 17,84 menit. Hasil chi square test menunjukkan adanya hubungan antara status tempat tinggal dengan pernah tidaknya responden naik kendaraan umum, demikian pula untuk variabel jarak tempat tinggal dan uang saku. Faktor utama dalam menggunakan mobil pribadi adalah kenyamanan, sedangkan untuk sepeda motor adalah waktu dan kendaraan umum adalah biaya. Model pemilihan moda untuk mobil pribadi adalah YMP = 0,452 Aman + 0,441 Selamat + 0,499 Fasilitas + 0,367 Privasi + 0,304 Biaya + 0,336 Waktu, sedangkan untuk bemo adalah YBM = 0,097 Aman + 0,114 Selamat + 0,107 Fasilitas + 0,121 Privasi + 0,138 Biaya + 0,097 Waktu, dimana: YMP = Prosentase Pengguna Mobil Pribadi, YBM = Prosentase Pengguna Bemo. Hasil uji sensitivitas menunjukkan faktor waktu dan biaya merupakan faktor yang relatif lebih sensitif dari pada faktor lain.
